Mrke: Vini d'annata
Castello di Ama L' Apparita IGT 1988
l’Apparita
IGT TOSCANA
1988
L’Apparita has enjoyed cult status right from its first vintage, 1985. Lying at the top of the Bellavista vineyard, at an elevation of 490 metres, is the collection of small parcels that make up the L’Apparita vineyard, a total of 3.84 hectares. It was planted to Canaiolo and Malvasia Bianca in 1975, but grafted over to clone 342 of Merlot between 1982 and 1985. Its open lyre training system and clay-rich soil make this small cru a true jewel in the international wine world.
Growing season weather conditions
Spring was particularly rainy, necessitating careful attention against possible vine pest attacks. Rain during flowering also caused some colure, resulting in a reduction in clusters per vine. Very high temperatures occurred in July and the first 20 days of August, which favoured veraison. Continued fine weather conditions meant that 1988 will be considered one of the best vintages of the 1980s, not only for early-ripening varieties but for Chianti Classico as well.
Vinification and maturation
The grapes were picked on 14 September into small boxes then visually inspected on sorting tables. After de-stemming and a gentle pressing, the must fermented in stainless steel tanks, with regular pumpovers. The wine macerated on the skins almost four weeks, then went to barriques for malolactic fermentation. When completed, the wine was racked, the final blend assembled, and the wine returned to barriques, half new and half once-used, for about 18 months’ maturation.
The wine was bottled on 17 June 2011, producing 10,300 standard Bordeaux bottles, 750 magnums, and 200 double magnums.
Tasting Notes
A deep red, at the same time luminous and saturated. A rich wealth of wild red berryfruit immediately greets the nose, followed by a broad array of spice. After a sapid and appealing attack, the elegance of the tannins, supple and compelling, is striking, and the aromatic sensations on the nose reappear here in full. A well-integrated balanced of its components give this wine a far from normal pleasureableness.
