- The origin of the most famous onion of Italy is not yet 100% sure, however most historians agree it was brought here about 4000 years ago by the Phoenicians, a people who had frequent contacts with the land of Calabria for commercial reasons.
Since then, this red onion has found its ideal natural habitat: sandy but fertile soils, a Mediterranean climate that avoids sudden changes in temperature and proximity to waterways.
Sweetness and freshness are the distinctive characteristics of this onion, which is also an excellent ally in more elaborated recipes and not only raw.
Moreover, its beneficial organoleptic properties are well known, in particular as an antioxidant and balancer of intestinal bacterial flora.
